Phoenix Canvas Art Supplies Brand Story

The Art Roots of Phoenix (1995)

In 1995, Jiangsu Phoenix Art Materials Technology Co., Ltd. began as Wuxi Phoenix Artist Materials Co., Ltd. in a 300-square-meter workshop in Wuxi, Jiangsu.
At that time, China’s oil painting market was still in its nascent stage, the company adhered to the development concept of “ALL FOR ART”, started the research and development and production of canvas rolls, and at the same time, began to develop stretched canvas to provide professional support for artists and dealers. By offering high-quality materials, Phoenix laid the foundation for what would become some of the best canvas art supplies available to artists globally.

Phoenix Going Global (2005)

Jiangsu Phoenix Art Materials Technology Co., Ltd.

In 2005, Phoenix Art Materials faced a U.S. anti-dumping investigation on canvas roll, overcoming it with technical expertise to launch the Sino-British Phoenix Fine Art Paints Company. This led to the 2006 opening of Phoenix Artist Materials (Vietnam) Co., Ltd., a 12,000-square-meter plant on a 20,000-square-meter site, focusing on stretched canvas, canvas panels, and canvas boards production. This expansion solidified Phoenix’s role in the global supply chain of canvas art supplies, showcasing its commitment to delivering the best art supplies to artists everywhere.

Innovation in Canvas

In 2007, Phoenix Art Materials entered the domestic market, introducing digital printing technology for canvas roll, and launching innovative inkjet canvas and digital stretched canvas, offering artists a broader range of creative options. A landmark achievement came in 2018 with the launch of the world’s first automatic production line for stretched canvas, a milestone that not only enhanced production efficiency and quality standards but also advanced industry technology. Beyond traditional hand-painted canvas, Phoenix Art Materials has successively developed digital stretched canvas and inkjet canvas, continually pushing the boundaries of canvas applications, solidifying its pioneering status in the oil painting materials industry. In 2018, the company achieved a breakthrough with the world’s first automatic production line for stretched canvas, significantly improving efficiency and quality. Reflecting on a century of modern Chinese oil painting, the art form has grown from a foreign “artistic language” into a vital genre amid expanding cultural exchange. Yet, many Chinese oil painters remain unaware or only partially informed about canvas materials—while the quality of pigments is quickly discernible, the superiority of canvas often requires time to reveal itself. For instance, many of Wu Guanzhong’s works from the 1970s now face deterioration, urgently needing restoration due to substandard, small-workshop canvas roll, resulting in cracked coatings and peeling paint. Through refined priming techniques, Phoenix’s canvas panels and canvas boards address this industry challenge, offering stretched canvas and canvas roll that withstand the test of time, reinforcing its technical leadership.

The Mission of Quality Canvas

Phoenix Art Materials recognizes that canvas is more than a medium—it is the foundation of cultural heritage. Using premium Belgian rain linen and FSC-certified frames for stretched canvas, alongside CE safety standards, the company guarantees the superior quality of canvas roll, stretched canvas, canvas panels, and canvas boards. Since the 21st century, Chinese oil painting has flourished, making the education of artists on material knowledge an urgent priority. The premature aging of inferior canvases, underscores the need for high-quality materials to ensure art endures. Through continuous innovation and technical expertise, Phoenix is dedicated to providing durable canvases, preserving artistic legacies for generations. This mission reflects the company’s profound respect for art and its steadfast commitment to Chinese cultural export, establishing Phoenix as an authoritative voice in the global art materials industry, bridging Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
