Good stretched-canvas packaging protects four vulnerable areas: the prepared face, the corners, the wooden frame and the tensioned fabric. A carton that looks tidy may still fail if products rub, shift, take concentrated corner loads or absorb moisture during storage and transit.
The right packaging system depends on product size, pack quantity, route, handling method and climate. Use the following framework as a specification and test plan—not as a substitute for carrier rules or shipment-specific engineering.
Map the damage risks first
Common failure modes include:
- abrasion or pressure marks on the ground;
- crushed or split corners;
- puncture through the face or reverse;
- bars bowing under stack load;
- hardware or labels marking an adjacent canvas;
- movement inside an oversized carton;
- moisture exposure and condensation;
- carton collapse during stacking.
Begin with the actual distribution path. A single retail parcel, a master carton, and palletised export freight experience different handling. Packaging should be validated at the level in which the product is actually transported.
Build protection in layers
1. Keep the surface clean and separated
Place a clean, non-abrasive interleaf or protective layer against the prepared face only after checking compatibility with the ground. Avoid materials that can transfer colour, texture, plasticiser or adhesive.
If canvases are packed face-to-face or face-to-back, use a separator that prevents direct contact with staples, labels, keys or hanging hardware. Do not allow loose components to travel inside the pack.
2. Protect corners and edges
Corners receive concentrated impact. Use fitted corner protectors or an engineered edge system that stays in position during handling. The protector should not press into the canvas face or create a point load on the frame.
For mixed-size packs, avoid improvised empty spaces that allow smaller units to move. A modular insert or size-specific pack is usually easier to validate.
3. Restrain without distorting
Wraps, bands and shrink film should hold the unit or bundle together without pulling the frame out of square or imprinting the surface. Protect contact points before applying tension.
The aim is controlled restraint. If the canvas can slide inside the carton, impacts transfer repeatedly to the corners. If restraint is excessive, it can deform the bars or ground.
4. Select an outer carton for the load
The carton must suit the weight, dimensions, stacking pattern and distribution route. A sturdy, undamaged box with space for cushioning is a basic carrier recommendation for fragile goods. Oversized or large flat shipments may require additional bracing, a crate, pallet support or an upright handling design.
Record board grade, dimensions, closure method and maximum pack quantity. “Export carton” is not a measurable specification.
Storage is part of packaging performance
Avoid placing canvases directly on floors or against external walls. Store cartons in a clean, dry, stable environment and use a stacking plan that prevents excessive load on lower units. Keep pallets clear of protruding nails, damaged boards and water exposure.
Wood and textile components respond to environmental changes. Allow reasonable acclimatisation before evaluating flatness and tension after a long route. A pack that passes immediately after production may behave differently after weeks in a container or warehouse.
Use first-in, first-out inventory control where appropriate, and keep carton labels readable without repeatedly opening the pack.
Design the master carton around handling
A practical carton specification should define:

- pack according to a written work instruction;
- record carton weight and external dimensions;
- conduct handling and distribution tests appropriate to the route;
- open the carton in a controlled way;
- inspect corners, ground, frame squareness and canvas tension;
- record damage by location and probable cause;
- revise one variable at a time and retest.
Carrier guidance is a starting point. FedEx, for example, recommends sturdy boxes, cushioning that prevents movement, and extra structural support for large flat freight. The shipper remains responsible for suitable packaging, and requirements vary by service and destination.
Make damage feedback useful
“Canvas damaged” is too vague for corrective action. A claim record should include:
- item, size, batch and carton number;
- location of damage within the carton;
- photographs of the unopened carton and internal pack;
- corner, edge, face and reverse condition;
- route and handling events if known;
- whether damage appears isolated or repeated.
This turns claims into packaging evidence. Repeated crushing at the same corner suggests a different cause from random puncture or moisture staining.
